Outports, Newfoundland

Artist Statement

These paintings reflect four different outport experiences.

In the fall of 2016, during my three-week residency in Duntara on the Bonavista Peninsula, the mood changed abruptly as the tourists left, restaurants closed, and the few residents began preparing for winter.

Weather is dramatic in Newfoundland. The growing season is short and in the spring everything grows at once – a Thrust Toward Spring.

Grebe’s Nest is a dramatic section of Bell Island with sea stacks, black sand, and the rust coloured rocks characteristic of the now-closed iron mine.

In the past, riddle fences were everywhere in Newfoundland; their remnants led me to take a workshop where we built one for a church in English Harbor. The workshop was an effort to keep the old craft alive.
